Hans Werner Henze: LUpupa Und Der Triumphe Der Sohnesliebe (Score)   Hans Werner Henze: LUpupa Und Der Triumphe Der Sohnesliebe (Score)
The fifteenth full Opera from the prolific Hans Werner Henze, and the first to feature a self-penned libretto. After the poems he wrote for his Songs from the Arabian, Henze has produced this unusal tale through adapting both Arab and Persian legends and invoking the same half-real, half-imaginary Arabia as the song cycle. The story itself is a fairy tale comedy with much in common with The Magic Flute. The orchestral arrangement is huge, featuring quadruple wind, five percussionists and a part for tape.

Hugh Wood: Symphony Op.21 (Study Score)   Hugh Wood: Symphony Op.21 (Study Score)
Commissioned by the BBC. Premiere: 23 July 1982 Henry Wood Promenade Concert, Royal Albert Hall, London.

The work is cast in four distinct movements, though as in Wood's violin concerto there is only one pause in the music, between the second and third; even here the break is minimised in effect by a resumption of motivic arguments. In terms both of harmonic structure and of expressive development, the four movements seem to have been conceived as a single, unified progression. While melodic and harmonic details are both derived from an intensive working of a handful of intervallic figures, in a way that owes much to his earlier serialism, Wood’s handling is here free enough to encompass a large-scale sense of tonal structure as well. Ths same tritone that inflicted so much of the melodic writing in Wood's 'cello concerto also affects the symphony. The music struggles to escape from an uncertain E/E flat area which dominates the first movement, towards an eventual unequivocal A

Hugh Wood: String Quartet No.4 Op.34 (Score And Parts)   Hugh Wood: String Quartet No.4 Op.34 (Score And Parts)
Commissioned by the BBC and premiered by the Chilingirian String Quartet.

Quoting Wood: In my Second and Third Quartets I attempted sectional, agglutinative forms: in my Fourth I return to the conventional four movement form of my First Quartet of 1962. Both works build up (as in the 19th century symphony) to the Finale, thus making it the most substantial movement, which provides a climax to the work. The First Movement has, in both works, only the status of an Introduction.

But there the consciously willed resemblances end. This Introduction follows the Second Quartet to a certain extent, in that it provides a sort of ‘cauldron’, from which elements to be used later can all be plucked. Its opening will reappear at various points throughout the work, most completely at a climatic point of the Finale (bar 110). Subsequent material will be more fully worked out in the second movement, a large Scherzo. The Introduction concludes with an unusually placed violin cadenza (itself a rare

Magnus Lindberg: Arena For Orchestra   Magnus Lindberg: Arena For Orchestra
Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995, as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors, Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra's festival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music, but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence, for example in ornamental figures and in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking, referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems to accelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and the suspension of the harmonies in the final climax, which can make one think of Mahler and
