Borodin was a major Russian composer of the ninteenth century, best known for his Polovtsian Dances and operatic works. His Symphony No.2 is one of the most important orchestral works ever composed and it is much studied as an example of Russian Nationalist Music of the Romantic Period.

This symphony took seven years to compose and not without difficulty. Borodin needed advice and guidance from Franz Liszt who told him not to listen to criticism and continue with his work before it was finished.

The four movements show dramatic contrasts in colour, mood and tempo to form a complete, rounded and a most beloved symphony.
