Liszt's setting of Goethe's great verse drama takes the form of three character portraits, as the composer illustrates Faust, Gretchen and Mephistopheles using his remarkable and innovative thematic transformations. The piece's expansion of the tonal range, and inventive employment of dissonance was later to influence the Tone Poems of Richard Strauss and Claude Debussy.
