Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-1982) was one of the most creative figures in the history of jazz. His music is a mixture of the complex and the simple, distinguished from the work of more run-of-the-mill jazz composers by his extensive utilisation of motivic building blocks. His compositions are incomplete without their secondary lines; leave out the major 2nds in Hornin' In, the parallel 6ths in Crepuscule Nellie or the parallel 3rds in Blue Monk and these compositions lose a touch of their Monkishness.
This book, as well as a biography of Thelonious Monk, contains an introduction to his music, a discography and specific notes on every piece contained in the book. There are eight original compositions and nine standards which Monk, as a pianist, made his own.
